BBQ Safety Tips-Summer 2024

Essential Barbecue Safety Tips for a Safe Grilling Season

As summer approaches, grilling becomes a favorite activity for many homeowners. However, it is crucial to follow safety guidelines to prevent accidents and ensure a safe and enjoyable barbecue experience. From handling propane and charcoal grills properly to using electric grills safely, these tips will help you avoid common hazards associated with grilling. Here are some important safety measures to keep in mind while barbecuing.

Propane Grill Safety

  1. Storage and Handling: Always store propane tanks outdoors, away from the grill and any heat source. Never store or transport them in your car's trunk.

  2. Gas Management: Ensure the gas is completely turned off after use and when changing tanks. Check for leaks with a soapy solution, and only buy propane from reputable suppliers.

  3. Usage Location: Never use a propane grill on a terrace, balcony, or roof, as it is dangerous and often illegal. Limit the number of 20-pound propane tanks to two per property.

  4. Ignition Safety: Always ignite the grill with the lid open to prevent gas buildup and potential explosions. Turn off the gas first, then the controls when done grilling.

Charcoal Grill Safety

  1. Indoor Use: Never use a charcoal grill indoors, as it can produce dangerous carbon monoxide (CO) levels.

  2. Starter Fluid: Use only barbecue starter fluid to light the grill, and never add it to an open flame. Let the fluid soak into the coals before lighting.

  3. Clearance and Safety: Keep at least 10 feet of clearance from buildings, and have a water source nearby. Be careful not to spill fluid on yourself, and dispose of ashes safely.

  4. Grill Base: Fill the base with no more than 2 inches of charcoal to prevent overloading and potential fires.

Electric Grill Safety

  1. Avoid Combustibles: Do not use lighter fluid or other flammable materials with electric grills.

  2. Extension Cords: Use appropriately rated extension cords and unplug them when not in use. Keep cords out of foot traffic to prevent tripping.

  3. Manufacturer’s Instructions: Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe operation.

General Grill Safety Tips

  1. Safe Placement: Ensure the grill is in a safe location away from children and pets, and use it on a flat, non-combustible surface.

  2. Unattended Grills: Never leave the grill unattended to prevent accidents.

  3. Fire Extinguishers: Keep a fire extinguisher or garden hose nearby in case of emergencies.

  4. Post-Grilling: Allow the grill to cool completely before moving or storing it, and clean out grease and debris regularly.

  5. Clothing: Avoid wearing loose clothing that could catch fire, and use long-handled tools and flame-resistant mitts.

By following these safety precautions, you can enjoy a safe and fun grilling season. Remedy Inspections offers comprehensive home inspections with detailed reports that help our clients make more informed decisions about their home.
